About Us

Martha Jefferson Randolph Chapter, NSDAR, is a fun and friendly group of patriotic women dedicated to furthering the goals of DAR: historic preservation, education and patriotism. If you are interested in finding out more about our chapter or DAR membership, please contact us. The chapter was organized in Sherman in 1927 by Anna Hotchkiss Gillespie. Our founding regent chose to name the chapter for her great-grandmother, Martha Jefferson Randolph. “Patsy” was the first-born child of Thomas Jefferson and his wife, Martha. Our members are proud to continue the work she began almost 100 years ago.

Calendar

Chapter meetings are usually held September through May (except during December), with additional social events, service activities, and special programs offered on different dates and during the summer months. Chapter programs offered during meetings have included a wide variety of interests, including genealogy, commemorative events, field trips, and re-enactments of historical personalities. Chapter Activities

DAR is a women's service organization dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education, patriotism, and honoring the Patriots of the American Revolutionary War. Our national Motto is God, Home, and Country. Martha Jefferson Randolph Chapter, NSDAR, members restored Sherman Hendricks Family Cemetery. John Hendricks and his brother-in-law were some of the Grayson County founding families.

The chapter presented a $10,000 grant to veterans support group, Taking it to the Streets, for their housing project. Additionally, funds and supplies have been donated to the veterans hospital in Bonham, Texas, while thanking and honoring our local veterans.

School supplies and books are donated each year to local schools and each April. Scholarships are awarded to two Grayson County seniors. Funds and a new wheelchair were donated to the local school’s nurse’s office.

The chapter honored our founding regent with a grave marking ceremony, made Quilts of Valor and awarded them to area veterans. Wreaths are laid on veterans graves during the Wreaths Across America ceremony each year.

In February of 2025, we installed and dedicated a DAR America 250! Patriot Marker at Veterans Memorial Park in Gainesville.

Membership is open to all women 18 years of age and older who can provide lineal, bloodline descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence. Read more details on our Texas Society DAR membership page.
