About La Villita Chapter NSDAR
Our Beginning
The city of College Station was incorporated for only five years, when Mrs. S.W. Bilsing recognized the need for a chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Bilsing, regent of the William Scott Chapter NSDAR in Bryan, lived in College Station. She believed in the importance of sharing the Society's three mission areas: historic preservation, education, and patriotism, in her hometown. In October 1944, organizing chapter meetings began in the home of Mrs. E.B. Reynolds in College Station. The La Villita Chapter NSDAR was confirmed as a National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) chapter in December 1944.
Origin of Our Chapter Name
Nancy Reynolds Tiner, daughter of Mrs. Reynolds, and a past regent of the Chapter was twelve years old in 1944. She was in middle school at A&M Consolidated and studying Texas history in school using a textbook written by Texas A&M College professor Dr. Ralph Steen. The topic was La Villita, or "The Little Village," in San Antonio the first permanent Spanish settlement in colonial Texas. While her mother and the other women discussed the naming of the chapter, Nancy suggested La Villita. The suggested name was considered appropriate, since College Station was a small town or “little village.”
Our Chapter Today
Similar to its community, the La Villita Chapter NSDAR is vibrant and growing. Today, we continue many of our original chapter projects. Each year, we award two students with ROTC medals. We present the DAR Good Citizens award, essay awards, and distribute Constitution Week items in area schools. We place U.S. flags in our local cemetery to honor our veterans. Our efforts at historic preservation have continued.

Our chapter recognized the 50th anniversary of the Viet Nam War by joining with sister chapters, William Scott and Come & Take It Chapters, to place a granite bench at the Clara Mounce Public Library in honor of those who fought in that war. The chapter continues to support patriotic projects in the community.
Meetings
Our chapter meets on the second Thursday of the month, September through May, except for January and February, and hosts a speaker each time. In January, we hold an annual business meeting. In celebration of Presidents Day, our chapter, along with the William Scott and Come & Take It Chapters, hosts a luncheon during the month of February.
